Automated library system for $100 Per Year? !

  • If you could have an online library catalog which includes full services: patron catalog, reports, circulation, Z39.50 to find and share records from other libraries, etc. …
  • If that library catalog were a union catalog, including all entries in the Christian Library Journal library catalog, with thousands of good books already cataloged and ready for you to find for your books and use the shared record…

We (CLJ)use OPALS, an online library catalog, and you can take a look at it on our website: CLJ Library Catalog. Recently I asked our catalog provider for the best price he could give small Christian school and church libraries if they shared a union catalog. He said $100 a year for each library. Each library would have their own catalog, own homepage, etc., but could share records with each other, as well as with larger libraries using Z39.50.
If you are seriously interested, and ready to commit to such a catalog, please email us with your school/church name, contact person, mailing address, and phone number.
I think we can do this with only a few libraries to start.
Pray about it! This is a real gift from the Christian people at OPALS.
This sounds like a good deal in that OPALS includes not just an online catalogue but also circulation functions as well  and those two functions are at the entry-level for circulating ebooks.  OPALS has a good reputation among church librarians as evidenced by recent comments at the Church Libraries Facebook site.  (I haven't used it myself so I'm not endorsing it here.)
